Why design a building in a circular way? How does the cylindrical shape relate to its context? These two premises mark the beginning of our design process for Centro Lol-Ha. Located in Mérida, a city recognized for its warm climate and abundant vegetation, the formal idea of a cenote is taken as a reference: a cylinder buried in the land where vegetation creates a fresh subclimate and emotionally isolates you from the outside.

Extrapolating this idea to a mixed-use building, the circular shape of it is conceived as a place where spaces turn towards a vegetated center; where view constraints are removed by taking advantage of all the fronts of the terrain; where areas with cross ventilation are achieved to make the climate more pleasant. Thus, Centro Lol- Ha is thought of as an open building that meets the necessary conditions to enjoy it outdoors.

In addition to the shape of the building, the design is also analyzed in section in which the center is understood as an extension of the sidewalk, from the public area outside to the interior. The urban boundaries are erased and the visual connection of the levels with the vegetation is accentuated, which is not only achieved at the ground floor level, but at each level is repeated to achieve the desired density. Finally, the materials are thought of earthy, clear and warm colors exclusive to the area, which allows the construction to be non-invasive with its context.
